Who gets to be remembered in the public realm and why? What should we do with monuments and memorials that are now deemed objectionable? How can we open up the processes of commemoration to new voices so that our future memorial landscape presents a more diverse and inclusive picture of society?
Throughout 2018 Historic England sought to explore these and other questions related to commemoration as part of their Immortalised season. Working closely with colleagues at Barker Langham I helped to plan and curate a new temporary exhibition on these themes. The exhibition brought together original artworks, historic collections and contemporary design solutions to examine hidden and surprising stories of memorialisation – past, present, and future.
