Roemer, Bert van de & Colin Sterling. 2023. Het Paleis voor Duurzamheid. Amstelodamum 2, 11-121
This short article co-authored with Dr. Bert van de Roemer considers issues of sustainability, heritage and adaptive re-use in the renovation of the head offices of De Nederlandsche Bank (DNB) in Amsterdam, originally constructed in 1968. The title refers to the building that used to stand on the same site, which was known as The Palace of Popular Diligence. Our article argues that the green credentials of the renovated building frame it as a new Palace of Sustainability – one that reveals the tensions, contradictions and possibilities of enacting heritage preservation in the shadow of the climate emergency.
Thanks to Bert for the proposal to write something on this theme, and all the translation work.
